Reseller profit guide
How to calculate resale profit without fooling yourself
Sale price is not profit. A useful calculation accounts for the cash collected and every direct cost required to make that specific sale.

The practical formula
Net item profit = sale price + shipping collected − item cost − marketplace fees − advertising fees − shipping cost − refunds − other direct selling costs.
Keep business overhead such as subscriptions and mileage separate from item profit, then subtract it when reviewing the wider business. That gives you both a clean item comparison and an honest overall result.
Margin and ROI answer different questions
Profit margin divides net profit by the money collected from the buyer. It shows how much of the sale remains. ROI divides net profit by the inventory cost. It shows how efficiently the cash tied up in the item performed.
- Margin = net profit ÷ gross revenue
- ROI = net profit ÷ item cost
- Neither measure captures how long the item took to sell
Estimate before buying; reconcile after selling
Before sourcing, use realistic sold comps, an estimated fee rate, and a conservative shipping amount. After the sale, replace estimates with actual fees, label cost, promoted listing charges, and refunds.
